Icon depicting "The Resurrection of Lazarus" Dim. 44.5 x 31.5 cm. 20th century Provenance from Greece, as per registration. Table, canvas, chalk, egg tempera, gold leaf. "The resurrection of Lazarus" is part of the cycle of the Twelve Mobile Feasts, whose placement in the calendar varies according to the date on which Easter falls; together with "The entry of Christ into Jerusalem" marks the beginning of the Passion period. The upper part of the scene is dominated by two mountain massifs; Before the walls of the city of Bethany a group of Jews look at Christ with wonder. On the left of the scene the group of the Apostles, the illuminati or those who have had the opportunity to listen to the Word of Jesus, in the foreground Peter. Lazarus is wrapped in the funeral bandages, he leaves the sepulcher carved into the mountain. At the center of the scene is the Blessing Christ who with his left hand holds a scroll or the chirograph of sin, where all the sins of Man are indicated. Jesus wears a red robe symbolizing human nature and is wrapped in the blue cloak that represents his divine nature. The two women in the foreground, prostrate to Jesus, are the sisters of Lazarus: Martha and Mary. The representation is faithful to ancient iconography, the scene is full of characters and details, pictorially pleasant even if technically simple. It is probable that there was the intent to make it appear more ancient by creating excessive widespread crimping and using a wooden board sketched in the cut and artificially aged on the edges. On the back there are not the interlocking crosspieces typical of ancient tables that have the purpose of limiting the bowing over time. The background and the haloes were made with gold-like leaf.
