Detailed Description

We are pleased to present this superb Spanish wedding chest, originally from the Castilla y Leon region, in seventeenth century solid blond walnut root.

The state of conservation is exceptional: the nails, the hinges, the side handles and the lock are coeval.

The rarity of this splendid piece of furniture is the solid blond walnut root wood with which it was made, thanks to the many natural veins, it is very elegant and refined, versatile and valuable. It comes in a bright amber color of different shades giving the case a beautiful three-dimensional effect, luminescent and velvety to the touch.

The box rests on two large parallel bases to support the heavy weight of the briar.

This type of wedding chest was mainly used in Italy and Spain from the 14th to the 17th century and was the typical closet for clothes, linens, money and more. As a container of clothes it appears, for example, against the background of Titian's Venus of Urbino.

It was generally placed in bedrooms, and often contained the bride's trousseau, so we talk about real wedding chests that were made for weddings, often decorated with the coats of arms of the spouses' families. Equipped with handles, it was literally transported on the wedding day from the bride's house to that of her husband, and therefore represented both the baggage that she carried with her, and the dowry with which she increased the house of the consort. Cassoni were also given to girls from good families who entered the convent. The importance of the caisson is linked to the frequent presence of painted, carved or inlaid decorations, which made it pieces of absolute value in the furniture especially in the Renaissance.

The chest has been restored in Madrid at our trusted atelier Prof. Jorge Paz Gonzalez specialized in the restoration of antique furniture, who has been able to maintain the original patina without losing the personality and identity of the case and this gives the furniture a considerable value added.
