We present this valuable work of art, an extremely rare jewel for the antiques market and emblem of Tuscan art of the second half of the sixteenth century. It is a cross-shaped table on which the Crucified Christ is painted, originally placed on the altar.
These types of works, which spread from the end of the fourteenth century in Tuscany, were usually placed in the upper part of the altar and, on the occasion of Holy Week, could lead to processions, flanked by Mary and St. John as in a sort of Calvary.
Entering into the merits of painting, stylistic elements of the evident Florentine matrix are noted, and in particular concrete points of contact with the works, of a similar subject, of the master Santi di Tito (Florence 1536 - 1603), prolific creator of images with a sacred theme and great leader of the anti-Mananierist renewal of Florentine painting.
Among the numerous Crucifixions carried out, we can mention the Crucifixion of Christ with Saint Francis of Paola from the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Chambéry (France), the Crucifixion of Christ with the Madonna, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Mary Magdalene of the Uffizi Gallery (Florence ) and again the altarpiece with the Crucifixion of Christ in the Basilica of S. Croce (Florence).
In each of these works, it is easy to identify the same characters of the model of Christ of the proposed work. We can grasp how the artist applies himself to an accurate drawing, expressing a sober acronym for narrative clarity and chromatic score. The typical stylistic features of the Counter-Reformation are therefore evident, based on an extreme simplification of forms, with clear devotional intent.
The image, albeit with the slightly oxidized paint, makes it easy to read the pictorial surface and evaluate its high quality and refined design.
